MASTERPIECES OF THE SEAS

This superb book "Shells: Masterpieces Seas " will quickly integrate my library!
Released in 2009 (that I just discovered!) reprint the book summarizes the majestic eighteenth century engravings of conchologists Dezallier Argenville. The Conchology, or natural history of sea shells, freshwater and terrestrial fossils, aims to facilitate the determination of shellfish, whether marine, river and land, fossil or current. Dezallier Antoine D'Argenville began a third edition of this book reissued in 1757 and often criticized, but his death left it unfinished. The writer and publisher of Favanne Jacques (1716-1770) and son it did Jacques Guillaume Favanne published in 1780 this book very popular with collectors, because under its influence, the Natural History in Paris experienced an unprecedented rise in popularity. The nomenclatures
Dezallier were used by another great naturalist, Carl von Linné to organize his own collection. The nomenclaures Linnaeus also included in this book. Dezallier used also in 1742, a binomial nomenclature which prefigured that of Linnaeus.

This work has already enjoyed great success in the eighteenth century, the era cabinets of curiosities, it is now complemented text to present the man of science and art of what was Antoine Dezallier Argenville and impact of the introduction of science conchology France.

Historically, shellfish were considered "artifices of Nature". Cicero saw these sea creatures as the "recreation of the eye and mind." In his De Oratore, Cicero extolled the values of leisure and friendship, cultivated by two friends who used their spare time to collect shells. Was attributed to the beauty of shells of double capacity to elevate the spirit and fun the senses but also to refine the taste and creativity of artists. The myriad forms of shellfish, the variety of their subjects and their nuances, shades from pure white to the most brilliant, inspired all people, all areas of craft production and art - from painting to the goldsmith, the Architecture in textile production, from sculpture to furniture, weapons scenography.

Antoine Joseph Dezallier Argenville (1680-1765) was a French collector of the eighteenth century. It feeds his life during such a fascination with shells that inspired him one of the most spectacular structures ever dedicated to molluscs. Published in Paris in 1780, his "Natural History of Conchology or sea shells, Freshwater, Land and Fossils" was the sum of knowledge gained during his time in conchology.
